CreateAthon 2023
In April 2023, I participated in a volunteer design challenge called CreateAthon! It's a design marathon hosted by AIGA that was held at Steampunk, Inc. in McLean, Virginia. Volunteer designers were placed in a team and randomly paired with a participating nonprofit to work with. Once assigned to my team, our client (a nonprofit called HomeAid) briefed us on their sub branding needs for an event called "CareDay", and some requests for new/updated brand collateral. Not only did we have a ton of deliverables, but we had to create a presentation as well, with just 24 nonstop hours to get it done.
We got straight to work, and referenced HomeAid's brand guidelines to develop a clear brand approach and inform the style for our designs. I came up with the manifesto "help people help people", contributed to the logo design through sketching and deliberation, created icons, the postcard design, and yard signage (my design was delivered, but not in the presentation). The team also produced lots of other assets including Canva templates, web designs, and apparel mockups. After the event, we sent the HomeAid rep all of the assets we created and made sure to handle any small, additional requests after the event. Overall, it was an incredible experience! From client interaction, to collaboration and presentation, I gained so much from just 24 hours of work, and I would love to do it again someday. I hope you enjoy!
